Charles Wesley
Cummings
Sep 10, 1956 — Jul 8, 2025
Charles Wesley Cummings, age 68, entered eternal rest on July 8, 2025, at the Southeastern Louisiana Veterans Hospital in New Orleans, LA. Born September 10, 1956, at Georgia Infirmary in Savannah, GA, Charles was the son of Hurley Cummings and Pinkie Simmons.
Charles grew up in Savannah and later moved with his family to Harlem, NY, during the Great Migration. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Marist College, where he also played basketball. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1985. He continued his education at the University of Southern California, where he pursued his MBA.
Professionally, Charles found his calling in logistics. He retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service with Gulfstream Aerospace, where he started as a Repair Controller and advanced to Logistics Specialist.
While working abroad in Saudi Arabia as a logistics contractor, Charles met Joy Hewitt, a British nurse also working under contract. In 1991, Joy and the girls relocated from the United Kingdom to join Charles in Savannah, where together they built a life rooted in faith, service, and love.
Charles was a devoted member of Overcoming by Faith Church Ministries, serving as a Sunday School teacher and sound technician for nearly two decades. He was a craftsman, a music curator, a cycling enthusiast, a basketball player, a storyteller, and a faithful friend. His signature smile, intellect, playlists, and helping hands left a mark on everyone he encountered.
He is preceded in death by his father, Hurley Cummings Sr., brother Hurley Cummings Jr., and his mother, Pinkie Cummings, as well as his best friend and uncle, Torris Smith.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Joy W. A. Cummings; daughters: Captain Danielle Cummings, U.S. Army and Lauren Cummings-Sutton (Chaz Sr.); grandchildren: Jorden, Chaz Jr., Charleigh Rose; siblings: Betty McCurdy, Bobby Cummings (Darlene), Vernon Cummings (Patricia), Linda Bisard (Tyrone), Dana Williams, Apostle Van Green, Patricia Stevens; godchildren, extended family, and many cherished friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, August 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM EST at Overcoming by Faith Ministries, 9700 Middleground Rd, Savannah, GA 31406. Services will be live-streamed at: https://overcomingbyfaith.online.church (link available 1 hour before the service).
