We celebrate the life and memory of Mrs. Ophelia Akra Ward whose death occurred Monday, April 27, 2020 at her residence.
Ophelia Akra Ward born August 23, 1917 in Riceboro, Georgia was the fifth child of seven born to Henry and Annie Akra. She accepted Christ at an early age first attending First Anderson Grove Baptist Church in Riceboro, Georgia and later joining the First African Baptist Church of Savannah, Georgia in the 1940’s.
Prior to moving to Savannah, Honey as she was affectionately called, married Andrew Ward. They had five children Roseanna (Sister), Fannie (Bee), Alma, Ruth, and Joann.
Ophelia was a domestic engineer for many years. She was loved and beloved by the families she assisted. She received accolades and gifts for her dedicated service. Ophelia was honored by the City of Savannah on her 100th birthday. Ophelia was a dedicated and decorated member of the Senior Saints at First African Baptist.
Honey was preceded in death by her beloved daughters Alma and Joann both of Buffalo, New York.
In her 102 years she affected, infected, and protected generations with her kind spirit, gentle ways, and signature smile. Her 15 grandchildren, and innumerable great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and great great great grandchildren mourn her loss. She is also mourned by her loving nieces and nephews, as well as the community and church at large.
Public Viewing will be held 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2020 in the Chapel.
