“A Time To Be Born”
Mary Elizabeth Broughton was born in Savannah, Georgia on October 6, 1931 to George Broughton and Adeline Ellis who both preceded her in death.
“A Time To Learn”
Elizabeth attended Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and graduated from Beach High School in 1951. She attended Marquette Michigan Junior College. She learned to play the piano at an early age with a steady passion.
“A Time To Serve”
Elizabeth was a pianist and organist for several churches throughout the city of Savannah for over forty years until her health begin to decline. Up to the that time, she continued expressing her musical gift while playing for special occasions in the Savannah area. She completed cosmetology school at Madame Meyers School of Beauty and Billie Wilson where she was an instructor. She is a member of Electra Chapter of the Eastern Star Order of Prince Hall Masons.
Elizabeth was a devout member of the Historic Bolton Street Baptist Church for over eighty-seven years where she served faithfully in many capacities. Elizabeth exhibited a strong passion and love for her family and those she encountered
throughout her lifetime.
After giving her all, Elizabeth Mary James transitioned on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Elizabeth united in Holy Matrimony with her husband, Louis D. James on December 2, 1947; Preceding her in death after 67 years of marriage.
There union produced a beautiful family with a beloved son, Donald A. James who preceded her in death and a loving daughter, Valerie E. James McGowan (Jimmy). Elizabeth and Louis had the esteemed pleasure of raising their first grandchild, Valerie E. Murchison (Thaddeus), along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Elizabeth also leaves a host of other relatives and close friends.
Public viewing will be held 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 17, 2021 in the Chapel of Campbell & Sons Funeral Home, 124 West Park Ave., Savannah, GA. 31401. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 18, 2021 at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Hunter Army Airfield Base, Savannah, GA. 31409.
