Cleveland Mills, Jr. was given the gift of life by Cleveland Mills, Sr. and Iola Willis Mills on August 9, 1944 in Augusta, Georgia. Cleve proudly attended for all grades and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in spring of 1962. He began studying Engineering at Tuskegee Institute (now University) before being drafted into the United States Army where he served from 1965-1968. After protecting his country, he began a career at Southern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T) before returning to Tuskegee to complete his studies. Cleve returned to AT&T where he remain employed until he retired in September 2015.
Cleve was joyful about having a full life. He was an avid reader, a computer whiz, a lover of good food, a historian, and lover of jazz. A proficient student of French and German languages, he would also engage anyone in a vigorous debate on politics or other topics in which he had a great interest. Cleve was known for his hearty laugh, rhetorical questions, and quizzical looks after one attempted to respond to his ever-long lectures. He had a thousand stories to tell and metaphors for everything!
On September 27, 2021 after 77 years of life on earth, Cleve was called home to rest and joined his loved ones who cleared the path for his homegoing including his parents, his sister Jacqueline, and his son Kurunmi.
Loved ones who will miss Cleve until they meet again are his dedicated wife, Sharon; daughters Gheisler Butler (Alonzo) and Shannon Mills, both of Augusta; son Rashad Calhoun of Pine Hill, AL; sisters Shirley Willingham (Larry) of Atlanta, Rosalind Mills of Augusta; brothers Rudolph Mills of Augusta, Ronald Mills of Atlanta, and Rayford Mills (Ivanna) of Augusta; grandchildren Zia Butler, Brennan Mills, Ariana Skye Calhoun, Rashad Calhoun, Jr., and Brayden Calhoun; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Now Cleveland Mills, Jr., finally, is at peace. He is in the place where souls reside. We hold him close in our prayers, hearts, and minds. May we connect with the brilliance of his spirit today and always.
