A TIME TO LIVE
Mrs. Martha Dawkins Massey was born June 3, 1932 in Columbia SC to the late Albert Dawkins and the late Ruth Johnson Dawkins. Martha was educated in the South Carolina school system where she attended Booker T. Washington High School. She went on to Allen University in SC where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. She later received her Master’s Degree at Georgetown University. She furthered her education in Behavioral Disorder where she received a Masters at South Carolina State University. Martha started her teaching career at an early age. She taught math at Voorhees College in Denmark, SC. In 1965, she moved to Savannah, GA and began teaching at Alfred Ely Beach High. She also taught at Savannah High and Johnson High schools. She received a lifetime teaching certificate for the Chatham County School Board.
In 1987, Martha was the first African American woman to open a business (New Image Beauty Salon) on Broughton Street. She was also the first African American woman to open a business (Mikki’s Jazz Lounge) in City Market She also ventured in the cities tourism business by opening Mikki’s Tours By Taste. Martha is also an author of two cookbooks: God’s Little Chillun-Plantation Cookbook and Dancing, Prancing and Shouting In the Peach Orchard.
A TIME TO LOVE
Martha was joined in Holy Matrimony to Elwood Thomas Massey and became the proud mother of a dear and loving son, Elwood Thomas (Tony) Massey II on August 20, 1959.
A TIME TO SERVE
Martha was a faithful member of St. Paul CME Church. She served as a Stewardess and was a past President of the Steward Board on the local and CME Conference level. She also served on the Hospitality Committee.
A TIME TO DIE
Martha was preceded in death by 2 siblings, James Dawkins and Moses Dawkins. Martha endured a long illness under the care of Hospice. On Saturday May 15, 2021, Martha was called by the Heavenly father while at home surrounded by her loving son and daughter in law.
A TIME TO MOURN
Martha leaves a living legacy in the lives of those who knew her. A devoted and faithful son, Elwood (Tony) Thomas Massey, II (Adrienne Massey) of Savannah, GA, one brother, Robert W. Dawkins of Columbia, SC., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.
Public viewing will be held 1-5 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2021 in the Chapel of Campbell and Sons Funeral Home, 124 W. Park Ave., Savannah, GA. Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2021 in the Chapel of Campbell and Sons Funeral Home, 124 W. Park Ave., Savannah, GA.
