Mrs. Joann Beverly Burrell (née Howard), of Savannah, GA, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 29th, 2020 at the age of 78.
Joann was born to parents David Howard and Alma Robinson on June 21st, 1942 in Savannah, GA. She grew up as an only child and graduated high school in Newark, NJ. In 1958, she married Robert Brown and the couple moved to New Brunswick, NJ and had 3 children together. While in New Jersey, she worked at Acron Security and started her career in the medical field as an X-ray Technician.
Joann married the love of her life Ulysses Burrell on June 24th, 1967 and the couple had one child together. The couple moved back to Savannah, GA and she continued her career in Radiology at Memorial hospital. Joann worked in the medical field for 15 years and took great pride in treating her patients. She retired in 1985 and spent the latter part of her life enjoying her grandchildren and husband. Joann had a passion for children and had a special way of bringing out the best in them. You would often see her on the sidelines at her grandchildren’s football games or cheering in the stands at soccer games. She served as treasurer for the Savannah Silver Cheetahs from 2003-2011. Although she was treasurer, the most important job on the team was providing love and support to her grandchildren and all other children on the team.
Joann loved to cook and feed her family as well as everyone around her. People would often say that they could taste the love in her food. For Joann, cooking was an extension of love. During family gatherings, Joann found great pleasure in playing card games. It was a special way of bonding with family members. She was known for her feisty, yet caring personality.
Joann is survived by her daughters, Shawnette and Kharen; her son, Christopher; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses Burrell; her son, Robert Jr; her granddaughter, Alaina; her parents, David and Alma and aunt, Lee A. Malone.
