Deacon William Jackson Milton, M.D., PH. D.

August 10, 1937 ~ November 17, 2021 (age 84)

To know Dr. William (Bill) Milton Sr. was to love him. He greeted everyone with warmth and his legendary smile. He started and ended each day with thanks to his Lord and Savior, serving with a heart of gold, a sense of humor and a love for all. His embrace, wisdom, and words of encouragement will live on with each of us.

Born to Curley and Lorine Milton on August 10, 1937 in Savannah, GA, Bill was a true gentleman and a scholar. Through his unprecedented work ethic, he achieved many honors and accolades both professionally and personally. A dedicated alumnus of Woodville High School, he cheerfully celebrated every reunion and designed the Wolverine logo. Bill excelled in football and track at Woodville. He enjoyed boxing, baseball, football, and golf (becoming a member of the PGA hole in one club at the 7th hole at Mary Calder Golf Club in 1980). He shared his love for sports with his children.

Bill started his career serving four years in the Air Force, he then went on to serve in the Airforce Reserve. After serving in the Air Force, Bill returned to Savannah and graduated from Savannah State College earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. During college he met and married his first wife, Lois Hughes, to whom two children were born; Melissa & William Jr.

After graduation, Bill continued to serve his community by teaching science at Myers Middle school in Savannah, GA, and in Effingham Country before attending Southern University, LSU for his master’s in biology. Being the avid scholar that he was, he then went on to pursue a PhD from Northwestern University. Continuing to excel, he earned his M.D. from Rush Medical School, becoming one the first medical professionals to obtain a PhD and MD and practice in Savannah, GA.

It was during this time, he met and married his second wife, Arlise Clark of Chicago, IL, the love of his life for forty-two years. Through this union, two children were born; Lisa and Jason.

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Milton once more returned to Savannah, GA to serve his community and started his residency at Memorial Hospital as a family practitioner. Post residency, Dr. Milton dedicated his medical career to serving the community at the Westside Urban Health (Curtis Cooper Community Center) where he became Medical Director, delivered and cared for generations of children and bettered the health of those in need. As a leading medical professional, Dr. Milton was considered for the position of Surgeon General under the Clinton Administration.

Deacon Milton served this community on many boards, and was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. As a lifetime member of New Zion Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon, and Sunday School Superintendent.

In 1995, Dr. Milton suffered an aneurysm and retired from the medical field spending quality time traveling, mentoring and inspiring all in his reach in his humble way.

Dr. Milton passed away peacefully at home with his doting wife by his side on November 17, 2021. He is predeceased by his parents, Curley & Lorine Milton and daughter, Lisa Milton.
