We celebrate the life and memory of Mrs. Brenda Elizabeth Luten whose death occurred Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Memorial Health UMC.
Brenda E. Johnson Luten was born in Savannah, Ga on August 9, 1947. She was the eldest daughter of the late James W. Johnson and the late Mildred Hardrick Johnson Middleton.
Brenda had one sibling who preceded her in death, Fredrick Johnson. One living sibling, Sondra Johnson Esmond.
Brenda attended St. Helena High School, St. Helena Island, SC. She was educated at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC and Savannah State College. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Columbia University. In pursing her chosen career, she was given the opportunity to work at the Head Start Program in Lenoir, NC. Pursuing another career choice, she worked for the National Gypsum Company in Savannah as their Sales director.
Brenda was able to love and live a full life that included lots of traveling to the beautiful Islands and Hawaii, just to name a few. Music was her passion as she loved playing the piano for her church family and sang in the choir. She was a member of The Daydreams singing group at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. She was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Savannah and a longtime member of Speedwell United Methodist Church and Connexion United Methodist Church as their choir director and church musician. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women’s group and the Church Women’s United as a musician.
She also sponsored a group of kids from Uganda who were associated with the Imani Miele Children’s choir.
Brenda was formerly married to the late James L. Norwood, III and to this union, they were blessed with three daughters; Nekita (Milton) Norwood-Boyd, Anjenita (Charles) Johnson and Tonja Norwood Guerrero. She later married the love of her life, Jack M. Luten, Jr. in 1988.
She leaves to cherish in her memories, her loving 9 grandchildren: Brittany (Michael) LaBrie, Julian J. Guerrero, Briana A. Boyd, Alenah D. Guerrero, Morgan A. Boyd, Milton E. (Trey) Boyd, III. Her step daughters: Jakita M. Luten ( Torren Harrison, Grandson), Lanell Scott (Nicholas) Jackson (Nickayla Jackson and Nicholas Jackson, Jr.), Special nephew, Dr. Samual Young II Special niece, Tia Wingster. Goddaughters, Alexia Luten- Sherman, Ivory Collins and Athena Hamilton. And a host of relatives and friends.
Public viewing will be held 1-6p.m. Friday, January 15, 2021 at ConneXion United Methodist Church (5411 Skidaway Rd. Savannah, GA)
Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Magnolia Memorial Gardens (5530 Silk Hope Rd. Savannah, GA)
