Obituary

We celebrate the life and memory of Saint Mamie C. Prescott whose death occurred on Thursday, December 26, 2024 at her residence.

On May 3, 1932, Mamie Claretha Haynes was born to Baldwin Haynes and Frances Houston in Savannah, GA. She was primarily raised by her godparents, Henry and Irene Polite and grew up on Centre Street next to the Prescott's and the Pinckney's across from what's now the Savannah Mother House of the United House of Prayer for All People.
She was educated in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and graduated from Alfred Ely Beach High School in 1950. That same year, she married Willie Prescott, Sr., with whom she had three children. She then went on to attend beauty culture school, from which she graduated and obtained her master cosmetologist license that she held for over fifty years.

After many years of working as a beautician from her home, she decided to make a change and under the guidance of Carl Kemp and Starling Hunter, she gained experience in bookkeeping and accounting. She attained formal instruction at the University of Georgia's Center for Continuing Education and became Mr. Hunter's partner at his firm. Upon his retirement, the firm became Prescott Bookkeeping Service, which she kept in operation until her own retirement in 2024. For over 40 years, St. Prescott was remembered by clients for her due diligence, professionalism, patience and dedication, especially around tax time leading up to April 15th.

St. Prescott was a deeply committed Christian woman, and her godparents placed her name on the House of Prayer roll under the leadership of Bishop C.M. "Daddy" Grace at the age of two. She received the gift of the Holy Ghost at an early age and went on to give a lifetime of faithful service to the church under four subsequent bishops. In her early years, she was a Grace Flower Girl, a Western Girl and served as a maid on the Holy Mountain and at Daddy Grace's home on West Victory Drive. She was also a member of the Grace Sunbeam Choir.

During the difficult transition period from Bishop Grace to Bishop W. McCollough, she served as secretary for the House "Back Attack". She went on to serve in other secretarial positions, including for the Love Gift donations and the G-Class program. Her knack for artistic expression led to her being the chairwoman of House decorations and the display (performance) committee, as well as the float decorations for Daddy and Madam McCollough during the annual Grace American Peace Parade in Savannah. She was also in charge of decorations for baptismal services and the reviewing stand for the bishops at the conclusion of the parades.

She was vice president of the Savannah District Marching Band (now the Savannah Marching Eagles) under St. Nettie Porter, before becoming president for many years, during which the band reached a membership of 225 with 81 boosters/volunteers. She also, until her health declined, ran the laundromat at the Madison Sweet Haven Apartments next to the church.

At the age of 17, St. Prescott joined the Grace Jubilairs choir, in which she served until her passing and was its longtime president and director. It was therefore the group with which she was most associated in the United House of Prayer, and they were known for visiting the sick and having service with them at home. She also sang with the Grace Sweet Georgia Roses, the Voices of Peace Mass Choir, and the Apostolic Youth Choir.

She became known as a charismatic mistress of ceremony during services when the bishops were in Savannah and thunderously called them "sweeter than sweeter than sweet, sugar honey darling!" in her trademark introductions of them. In 2010, she served as emcee at the national Memorial Day service in Washington, DC at the request of Bishop C.M. Bailey. She oversaw emcees in the Savannah District, and as recently as convocation in September 2024, she made sure she had her people in place for each service and still placed herself as a back-up.

From her various church positions, she trained and mentored people who would serve in the same or similar roles and sometimes succeeded her after she stood down. Many individuals throughout the House of Prayer can trace the beginning of their service to St. Prescott's encouragement and compassionate tutelage. She was a steadfast and humble servant for the Lord Jesus Christ who showed love and made people feel welcome and good about themselves.

On top of this, St. Prescott was a devoted mother who lovingly raised her children and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She found joy spending time with all of them, as well as extended family among her Houston, Haynes, and Prescott relations.

In the early hours of December 26, 2024, St. Prescott received her heavenly wings and took flight from labor to sweet reward. She was preceded in death by her parents and godparents, along with beloved siblings, Frank T. Simmons, Ella Mae Williams Smart Beatty, Henry L. Williams, and Elise E. Williams, as well as cousins and other relatives.

She leaves to mourn three cherished children, Willie Prescott, Jr (Valette) of Columbus, GA, Dr. Sylathea Renea Prescott-Hutchins—her only daughter—and Eric Tramelle Prescott (Felicia—her personal care nurse), both of Savannah, GA; seven adored grandchildren, Willie Prescott, III of Killeen, TX, Angelo Levelle Prescott, Nicholas Tramelle Prescott, both of Atlanta, GA, Nicole Latrelle Prescott Babbs (James) of Columbus, GA, Wesley Lawrence Prescott Hutchins—with whom she was quite close—of Savannah, GA, Darrell Boyd (Kimberly) of Seattle, WA, and Malaija Boyd of Atlanta, GA; 13 treasured great-grandchildren and three precious great-great-grandchildren; one beloved brother, Leroy G. Williams, Jr of Savannah, GA; one dear sister-in-law, Hazel R. Poitier Prescott Moye of Buffalo, NY, and an array of cousins, grand-nephews & grand-nieces, godsons & goddaughters, surrogate children, and other family, church members, friends, and loved ones.
