Obituary

We celebrate the life and memory of Mrs. Delores Phoenix Mack whose passing occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Delores Phoenix Mack was born November 3, 1938, to the late Deacon David and Lillie Mae Williams. A lifelong learner, she attended Chatham County Public Schools, graduating from A.E. Beach HS in 1955 and earned her B.S. in education from Savannah State College in 1959. She later completed her Master’s Degree in Education through joint studies at Armstrong and Savannah State Colleges.

James 2:18 “…someone will say ‘you have faith: I have deeds. Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.’”

Delores dedicated 30 years of her life to shaping young minds, teaching across various grades and academic programs as ateacher and reading specialist. Her enthusiasm for education left a lasting impression on countless students and many colleagues.

As a woman of deep faith, she was a devoted and active member of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church for her entire adult life(66+yrs), having served under 4 pastors. Though she did not hold the formal title of minister, her true servant’s heart shone through in her leadership. She dedicated her time and talents as President of the Deaconess Ministry, Sunday School teacher, Trustee Board member, Vacation Bible School coordinator, and other roles. She frequently spoke at many church programs and other occasions.

Her church celebrated her unwavering commitment to excellence by honoring her twice as Teacher of the Year, twice as Woman of the Year, Ms. St Paul, and as recipient of Outstanding and Dedicated Service award. Outside of her professional and spiritual devotion, Delores enjoyed life’s simple pleasures including cooking, gospel music, bowling, and rooting for the Atlanta Braves. She remained deeply connected to her community through active memberships in the Chatham County Retired Teachers Association, Outreach Ministries, the Cassandra Social Club, the Senior Citizens Bowling League, and the GA Retired Educators Assoc.

While she built a rich legacy with the board of education, church, and community, her highest priority was her family. Sheselflessly gave, pouring herself into her children and grandchildren, being their biggest cheerleader and supporter. She instilled into her children a strong Christian foundation, who have built upon that inheritance with their families. She embodied 1 Cor 13:4-8 Love is patient, kind, not envious, doesn’t boast, isn’t proud, does not dishonor others, is not self-seeking, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs, does not delight in evil, rejoices with the truth, always protects, trusts, hopes & perseveres. 2 Cor 9:7 “God loves a cheerful giver.”Delores cheerfully and generously gave to family & others, expecting nothing in return. She lived by love, forgave with grace, and sowed kindness. She was soft- spoken, weaving into her daily life Proverbs 16:24 “Gracious words are like honeycombs, sweetness to the soul and health to the body”.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herman Mack, brother Jimmie Williams and sisters Jeanette Woods & Betty Carson.
