Deacon Ernest Clayton
Maynor, Jr.
Sep 16, 1938 — May 1, 2026
Deacon Ernest Clayton Maynor, Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and respected community servant, peacefully transitioned on May 1, 2026. He was 87 years old. His life was marked by faith, service, leadership, and an enduring legacy of excellence.
Ernest was born on September 16, 1938, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Ernest Clayton Maynor, Sr. and Beatrice Maynor. He was the youngest of three children. Deacon Ernest matriculated through the public schools of Savannah-Chatham County and graduated from Alfred Ely Beach High School, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding athlete. A versatile and gifted player, Ernest excelled in football and basketball, earning varsity letters and recognition for his strength, speed, and leadership on the field. His athletic achievements were later honored with his induction into the Alfred Ely Beach High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
Ernest’s love for football extended beyond high school. He went on to play semi-professional football, continuing to showcase his talent and passion for the game. In later years, he also gave back to the community by mentoring young athletes and serving as an assistant coach.
Before answering the call to serve his country, Ernest worked for Annett’s Dairy, demonstrating early on his strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. A proud patriot, he later served his country by joining the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1967. After his military service, he continued to demonstrate discipline and dedication in all areas of his life.
Following his honorable military service, Ernest began his distinguished 36-year career with the Savannah Police Department. As a Corporal he served in the traffic and hit-and-run divisions, where he built a reputation for integrity, commitment, and excellence. His work made a lasting impact on the Savannah community. He retired in July 2000 after a dedicated and honorable career in law enforcement.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Ernest accepted Christ early in life and was baptized at Second African Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful and active member. He served on the Deacon Board for many years, offering spiritual guidance, support, and leadership to his church family. In recognition of his faithful service, he was bestowed the honor of Deacon Emeritus at Second African Baptist Church on December 21, 2025.
On June 6, 1965, Ernest united in holy matrimony with the love of his life, Maurena Zeigler, in Savannah, Georgia. Their union was blessed with three children: Ernest III, Maurena Denise, and Cassandra. Together, they built a strong foundation rooted in faith, love, and family values.
Ernest will be remembered for his quiet strength, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and found joy in their accomplishments. He also cherished the simple joys of life, especially spending time with friends during weekly card games—moments filled with laughter, fellowship, and lasting bonds.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Maurena Maynor; two sons: Roderick Ellis and Ernest Clayton Maynor III; three daughters: Romona Williams, Maurena Denise Maynor, and Cassandra Walker; six beloved grandchildren: Marcellus Williams, III, Monet Williams, Monique Williams, Taylor Maynor, Caytlyn Collins, and Sydni Marie Walker; sisters-in-law: Ida Chisholm and Ruth Dobson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Ernestine Dilworth and Emma Bush.
Ernest’s life stands as a testament to faith, service, discipline, and love. His legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched.
