Margaret C.
Robinson
d. Jan 27, 2026
We celebrate the life and memory of Dr. Margaret C. Robinson whose death occurred on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at her residence.
Dr. Margaret Chisholm Robinson, a beloved daughter, faithful servant of God, distinguished educator, and pioneering scholar, was born on October 31, 1930, in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, to the proud parents Sadie Lillian and Ralph Adolphus Chisholm, Sr. Raised in a nurturing and principled home, she was instilled early with strong values, intellectual curiosity, and an unwavering drive for excellence—traits that would define her remarkable life and legacy.
From her youth, Dr. Robinson's life was anchored in faith. She was nurtured spiritually at First Bryan Baptist Church, where she worshiped alongside her parents and, at a young age, committed her life to Jesus Christ. Her love for God's Word and the preaching she received there shaped her spiritual foundation and strengthened her conviction that, with the Lord on her side, all things were possible. That faith remained her compass throughout every season of her life.
Academically gifted and disciplined, Dr. Robinson excelled from an early age. She graduated with honors from Beach High School, setting the stage for a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. In 1952, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Savannah State College. Determined to deepen her expertise, she continued her studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she earned a Master of Science degree in Biology. Never content to rest on past achievements, she pursued doctoral studies at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, completing advanced research in Plant Cell Physiology—a testament to her intellectual rigor and perseverance.
Armed with a formidable academic foundation, Dr. Robinson embarked on a long, illustrious career in higher education. At Savannah State College (now Savannah State University), she rose through the academic ranks with distinction, becoming a tenured professor in the Department of Science. Her leadership and excellence were unmistakable. She served with distinction as Department Head for many years and ultimately concluded her career as Dean of the School of Science and Technology, leaving an enduring imprint on the institution she loved.
Dr. Robinson's professional accomplishments were extraordinary. She developed the first nationally recognized biology core curriculum at Savannah State, including senior research and seminar requirements for baccalaureate graduation—an innovation that transformed science education at the university. Under her visionary leadership, the department secured a $2.5 million federal grant from the National Science Foundation, elevating the Science Improvement Program and setting a new national standard. During her tenure, the biology department produced more than 80 medical doctors, along with countless Ph.D. and master's degree scholars, earning a national reputation for academic excellence, research productivity, and outstanding grantsmanship.
Her mentorship and commitment to excellence also gave rise to critical academic programs, including marine science, environmental science, biotechnology, and biomedical research, each a living testament to her foresight and dedication to expanding opportunity and access in the sciences.
Dr. Robinson's contributions were widely recognized and celebrated. She was cited for her achievements in higher education by the Georgia House of Representatives, honored for dedicated volunteer service by the Savannah Community Cardiovascular Council, and recognized for outstanding service by the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools Facilities Commission. She was named Alumnus of the Year by the Savannah State University National Alumni Association, Outstanding Teacher of the Year by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and a Distinguished Alumnus by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. She was further honored as a Woman of Achievement by the Port City Business and Professional Women's Club.
Her academic excellence earned her induction into numerous national honor societies, including Kappa Mu, Sigma Mu, Beta Kappa Chi, Beta Beta Beta, Kappa Alpha Pi, and Tau Alpha Pi. Dr. Robinson also held lifetime memberships in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Savannah State University National Alumni Association.
Despite her many accomplishments, Dr. Robinson often humbly credited her success to two guiding forces: her faith and her family. Her deep trust in God gave her the strength to climb what she often described as "the rough side of the mountain," persevering through challenges with grace and resolve. Equally motivating was her devotion to her beloved husband, Moses Robinson, and her cherished children, Marchanita Coleman and Rev. Dr. T. D. Robinson. She poured herself into building a loving home, often sacrificing time, energy, and sleep, believing that God had entrusted her with gifts meant to be used in service to others and for His glory.
Dr. Margaret Chisholm Robinson leaves to cherish her precious memories a loving and devoted son, Rev. Dr. T. D. (Alice) Robinson; caring grandchildren, Aria Gooddine, Angela (Deon) Paige, Tiffany Robinson, and Terrell Robinson; cherish great grandchildren, Camari Coleman, Teresa Gooddine, Omarion Coleman, Deon Paige, Aniyah Paige, Taelynn Robinson, Tavion Robinson, Corion Crawford, Cerenity Crawford; and devoted nephews, Eltoria (Khristi) Chisholm, Lorenzo (Sonya) Chisholm, and Rev. Billy Chisholm; her beloved goddaughter, Latosha Sanders; a host of extended family members, dear friends, former students, colleagues, and the loving congregation of First Bryan Baptist Church.
Dr. Robinson's life was a radiant testimony of faith, intellect, service, and love. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she shaped, the institutions she strengthened, the doors she opened, and the family she so deeply loved.
