Joseph Dan
Shuman
Nov 13, 1936 — Aug 9, 2025
On November 13, 1936, Willie and Mary Etta Shuman were blessed with a baby boy, whom they named Joseph. He later became affectionately known as "Brother" to most of his family, a title earned because he was always someone they could turn to in times of need—whether for help, a listening ear, or wise advice.
Joseph was born and raised in the Savannah area. He worked hard throughout his life in the construction industry and briefly served in the United States Army in his early adulthood. Later, he became a Longshoreman with ILA Local 1414 and was a devoted member of Kelly Temple Holiness Church for most of his life. Following an early retirement due to injury, he went on to own and operate several local businesses.
Joseph was married to Barbara Jean Waldburg Shuman, and together they were blessed with seven children and raised one bonus child. Their marriage lasted nearly fifty-three years until Barbara's passing. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara; five of their children—Donna, Keywanna, Tony, Daniel, and Sharon; two grandchildren—Tiahni and Kayla; his parents; and eight siblings—Woodrow, Arthur, William, Willie, Dorothy, Rosa, Earnestine, and Louise.
In time, Joseph married Mrs. Betty Manning Jones, with whom he spent the rest of his days in holy matrimony residing in Abbeville. Together they built a life devoted to serving God and leading others to Christ. Betty remained faithfully by his side until the very end. Joseph served as Associate Pastor to Brother Charles Bryant at Restoration Revival Center in Fitzgerald for several years. Most recently was ordained in October 2023 and appointed Assistant Pastor of New Christian-Life Ministries under the leadership of Dr. Sandra Dixon where also served on its Board of Directors.
A lifelong learner, Joseph believed in "studying to show himself approved." He earned his high school diploma as an adult and, in May 2021, received his Associate of Arts in Ministry from SHEMA Theological Seminary and Bible College. At the time of his passing, he was a candidate for a Bachelor's degree in Religious Education.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memory his sister Mary; his brother Isaac; his children Andrew (Lisa), Timothy, and Kiesha (Freddie); ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He also leaves his loving wife, Betty; his son by marriage, Tyronne; and many additional family members and friends gained through their union.
Joseph will truly be missed by all who knew him, but we rejoice in knowing that he now rests in the presence of the Lord, having heard the words: "Well done, My son. You can come on in."
