Diane
Albany
Dec 13, 1954 — May 21, 2025
Savannah
We celebrate the life and memory of Ms. Diane Albany whose death occurred on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at her residence.
On December 13, 1954, the world was graced with the birth of Diane Albany, born in Savannah, Georgia to Willie Mae Clark and Harvey Wimberly. As the oldest of Brenda, Shelia, and Michael, she carried a natural sense of responsibility, looking out for her younger siblings. She attended Chatham County Public Schools and upon completing her academic journey, Diane received her General Education Degree and quickly gained employment with the City of Savannah. During her tenure, she excelled in the Park & Tree Division, where she made headlines on the local news as being the first Black woman in Chatham County permitted to operate heavy machinery as part of the historical downtown park maintenance operations. She continued making groundbreaking achievements in her field until she retired. However, Diane knew her work extended beyond her past accomplishments, embracing a new path in the hospitality industry, eventually becoming the General Manager of the Baymont/LaQuinta Inn on Abercorn Street, where she excelled once again, proving that determination and grace could carry her into yet another successful career.
Diane moved with a quiet and observant soul, fiercely protecting those she loved. Known for her sharp sense of humor, she often expressed herself through simple gestures, facial expressions, or a single sound—and somehow, you always knew exactly what she meant. She cherished moments such as the time she spent playing spades with her family, starting her mornings with country music and coffee, and lovingly preparing her family's favorite meals -including her infamous liver and onions and the absolute best shrimp potato salad you would ever taste, which was always in demand at every gathering. Diane also had her signature hand gesture and sayings-sharp and funny in reserve for when her peace was disturbed, bringing both laughter and truth. Those who knew her best knew this well. But one thing was certain, when someone came to her in need, Diane moved without fanfare, ensuring everything was taken care of—always with her beautiful, reassuring smile. She had become a quiet hero.
Preceding Diane in death are her parents, Willie Mae Clark, and Harvey Wimberly; her husband, Olin Al Albany; beautiful daughter, Arial A. Albany; and Diane's special best friend, Melvin L. Johnson.
Missed by all, Diane leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Lori (Darryl) Harris, Dana Clark-Green, and Kiera Merchinson; son, Gary Merchinson, all of Savannah, Georgia; two sisters Brenda (Vernon) Williams and Shelia Walls; one brother, Michael Clark; nine grandchildren, Jakia Clark, Chyna Young, Carmesha Green, Leon Green, II, Ariyah Fennell, Olivia Merchinson, Aiden Bolton, Akeil Bolton, and Emeila Broomfield; one great grandchild, Khing Walker; special friend Gary Merchinson, Sr., all of Savannah, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other beloved family and friends.
