Obituary

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.  I have kept the faith."

2 Timothy 4:7

Captain John Edward Hunter United States Air Force Ret., 72, of Savannah, Ga was called home to rest, after a brief illness, in the comfort of his own home on February 5, 2024.  John was born on July 13, 1951 to the late Minerva Hunter and the late Jack Hunter, in Savannah, Ga. He was affectionately nicknamed "Meat" to his family and friends early in life. John's life was a testament to the enduring virtues of hard work, laughter and the importance of God, family and friends.  He never met a stranger, would help anyone in need and had a sense of humor that made you laugh on the worst of days.

John attended the public schools of Chatham County, graduated from Sol C. Johnson High School and went on to obtain his B.S Degree in Mathematics from Savannah State College.  After graduation he enlisted into the United States Air Force as an Airman, and applied and was accepted to Officer Training School (OTS) at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Upon completion of OTS, he was commissioned as a 2nd  Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain during his 20 years in the military.  He traveled all over the world and throughout the United States serving his country and managed to earn his Master's degree from Golden Gate University as well during that time.   John returned to Savannah, where he became a math teacher, who was highly respected and much loved by students and staff alike, at DeRenne Middle School for many years.  He was known to be a fierce protector of his students while wielding a strict and caring hand.  As he went about his daily life, it would not be unusual for a person to walk up to him and say "hello Mr. Hunter, I was in your math class".  He tutored many students to help them pass various grades as well as standard testing and was a certified teacher for the Gifted and Talented. He received many awards during both his military and teaching careers, including Airman of the Year, Officer of the Year, a member of the 2000 Who's Who Among American Teachers and both Derenne Teacher and Savannah Morning News Teacher of the Year, to name a few.

John loved the Lord and accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was a long-time member of the United House of Prayer for All People, attending the Hudson Hill Mission.   He served in many capacities throughout the years and could be found helping and assisting others in any endeavor the church took on or needed help with.  He was a faithful member and attended church regularly until his health began to fail.

Welcoming John into Heaven are his first wife Mildred Hunter; parents; grandparents; brothers, Alexander and Ronald Hunter; and brother in-law, Solomon Campbell III.

Left to cherish precious memories of him are, his wife Addie Smith Hunter; son Jemaul R. Hunter; step-daughter Tajuania Wilder of Macon, Ga.; godson DaiSean Wiley of Savannah; sisters Della Hunter Campbell of Hilton Head Island, SC and Jacquie Hunter Booker (Donald) of Greenville, SC; uncles Lacy Hutchins of Savannah, Wesley Hutchins of Hampton, Ga. and John Gibson of Victorville, CA; step-brother Eugene Bailey of Savannah; sister-in laws and brother in laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, step grandchildren and one step great grand "Lil-Man", family and friends.

May he rest in eternal peace and continue to be a guiding example of a life well lived.
